I reached for the edge. My hand sunk into the mud of the embankment. I pulled my body from the river and slithered along the ground, choking and coughing up water as I tried to find some air. My body felt numb from the cold water and I could barely curl my fingers. I flexed them anyway, trying to work away the stiffness.
I wasn’t sure how long I’d let the river take me, but its roar smothered my senses for far longer than it should have. I didn’t recognize my surroundings. The flora was much denser here. It obstructed the access to the river except for a few narrow spots that wildlife used to get water. I couldn’t stay here, though. The river was easy to follow, and it was only a matter of time before my troubles followed me here.
